Environmental Management Systems

Environmental management systems (EMS) can be utilised by organisations in both the private and public sectors to help them reduce their environmental impacts, comply with the increasing amount of environmental legislation, and demonstrate that they are managing their environmental risk responsibly. An EMS clearly demonstrates that your organisation is committed to environmental issues and is prepared to work towards improving your environment performance.

ISO 14001
ISO 14001 sets specific requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining the environmental impacts of an organisation, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, and then implements an action to meet these targets.
EMAS
EMAS is similar to ISO 14001 but requires organisations to reduce their environmental impact and communicate with their stakeholders about their environmental performance. Therefore it is often considered to be more rigorous than ISO 14001.
BS 8555
BS 8555 is similar to ISO 14001, but with a phased implementation; organisations have a choice regarding how far they progress and are able to gain recognition at each stage. There are six phases to BS 8555:
- Commitment and establishing the baseline
- Identifying and ensuring compliance with legal and other requirements
- Developing objectives, targets and programmes
- Implementation and operation of the EMS
- Checking, audit and review
- EMS acknowledgement (achieving Phase 6 gives full ISO 14001 accreditation)
