What are smart meters?
Smart electricity and gas meters provide accurate real time information on energy consumption. The government has introduced compulsory smart electricity and gas metering to help businesses save money and reduce their carbon emissions. Smart metering means automatic, accurate billing, and allows businesses to monitor live energy consumption and prices to help them use less power at peak times when it is most expensive.
By April 2014 advanced metering will be mandatory for sites with an electricity profile class of 5-8 and sites with a gas consumption of between 732 and 58,600 MWh per annum.
The Government is planning to extend smart metering for SME’s and by the end of 2020 all businesses will need a smart electricity and gas meter installed.
What are they?
Smart meters are the next generation of electricity and gas meters. They are different from old-style meters because they are able to transmit and receive data, to and from your energy supplier, rather than just generating a read-out.
What are the benefits?
- No more estimated energy billing
- No more need to take meter readings
- Know exactly where, when and how you consume energy
- Receive 100% accurate bills from your energy supplier
- Potential to move to improved tariff which will save you money
What you will save?
Trials undertaken by the Carbon Trust concluded that on average SME’s identified potential energy savings of over 12 percent when they installed smart meters and combined this with an energy-saving program. On average SME’s saved over £1,000 a year on their energy bills.
